sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3>2024<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>12 July 2024<\/strong> \u2013 The AI Act is published in the Official Journal of the European Union.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>21 May 2024<\/strong> \u2013 The European Council formally adopted the EU AI Act.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>21 February 2024<\/strong> \u2013 The European Artificial Intelligence Office was launched within the Commission, falling under the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology to support the implementing of the AI Act, especially for general-purpose AI.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>13 February 2024<\/strong> \u2013 the Internal Market and Civil Liberties Committees voted 71-8 (7 abstentions) to approve the result of negotiations with the member states on the AI Act.<br \/><em>* The EU&#8217;s 27 member states have unanimously endorsed the AI Act, affirming the political agreement reached in December.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2023<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>9 December 2023\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 The Parliament and the Council reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20231206IPR15699\/artificial-intelligence-act-deal-on-comprehensive-rules-for-trustworthy-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provisional agreement<\/a> on the AI Act.<br \/><strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>14 June 2023 <\/strong>\u2013 The European Parliament adopted its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2023-0236_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negotiating position<\/a> on the AI Act, with 499 votes in favour, 28 against, and 93 abstentions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2022<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>6 December 2022 \u2013 <\/strong>The Council of the EU adopted its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2022\/12\/06\/artificial-intelligence-act-council-calls-for-promoting-safe-ai-that-respects-fundamental-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common position<\/a> (\u2018general approach\u2019) on the AI Act.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>28 September 2022 \u2013 <\/strong>The European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_5807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> a targeted harmonisation of national liability rules for AI, aiming to complement the AI Act by facilitating civil liability claims for damages.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>5 September 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) at the European Parliament adopted their <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/AIA-JURI-Rule-57-Opinion-Adopted-5-September.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opinion<\/a> on the AI Act as the last committee in the Parliament.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>17 June 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/AIA-CZ-Options-Paper-17-June-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion paper<\/a> with other EU governments, listing the main priorities of the AI Act for them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>15 June 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The French Presidency of the Council of the EU circulated their <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/AIA-FRA-Consolidated-Version-15-June.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final compromise text<\/a> before Czech took over the presidency.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1 June 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 Deadline for each political group of the European Parliament to submit amendments to the AI Act. Thousands of amendments were submitted in total and briefly summarised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/digital\/news\/ai-regulation-filled-with-thousands-of-amendments-in-the-european-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>13 May 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The French Presidency of the Council published the text on <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AIA-FRA-Art-34-13-May.pdf\">Article 4a<\/a> <span>proposing to regulate general purpose AI systems, which are AI systems capable of doing a wide range of tasks, such as aim to understand images and speech, generate audio and videos, detect patterns, answer questions and translate text.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>20 April 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 <span>Brando Benifei and Drago\u0219 Tudorache, Members of the European Parliament leading on the AI Act in the IMCO and LIBE committees, published their\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/CJ40-PR-731563_EN.pdf\" rel=\"\">draft report<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2 March 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) at the European Parliament published their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/JURI-PA-719827_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amendments on the AI Act<\/a>. The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) at the European Parliament published their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/ITRE-PA-719801_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft opinion on the AI Act<\/a> one day later.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>3 February 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The French Presidency of the Council circulated a c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statewatch.org\/media\/3131\/eu-council-ai-act-high-risk-users-providers-5756-22.pdf\">ompromise text of Articles 16-29 <\/a>of the proposed AI Act, covering the obligations of users and providers of high-risk systems. Later, the French Presidency has circulated <a href=\"https:\/\/data.consilium.europa.eu\/doc\/document\/ST-6239-2022-INIT\/x\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another compromise text of Articles 40-52<\/a>, which concern harmonised standards, conformity assessments and transparency obligations for certain AI systems<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2 February 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The European Commission presented a new <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Standardisation Strategy<\/a> outlining their approach to standards within the Single Market as well as globally. Standards are the foundation of the EU Single Market and global competitiveness.<br \/><span data-doc-id=\"1907049000000218001\" data-doc-type=\"writer\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>25 January 2022 <\/strong>\u2013 The lead committees of the European Parliament, the Internal Market and Civil Liberties committees, had their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220119IPR21312\/artificial-intelligence-act-lead-committees-to-launch-joint-work-on-25-january\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first joint exchange of views<\/a> on the AI Act proposal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2021<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-doc-id=\"1907049000000218001\" data-doc-type=\"writer\"><strong>1 December 2021 <\/strong>\u2013 The European Parliament\u2019s internal market and civil liberties committees <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/143475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will jointly lead negotiations on the AI Act<\/a> with Brando Benifei (S&amp;D, Italy) being the lead negotiator together with Drago\u015f Tudorache (Renew, Romania) from the civil liberties committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>29 November 2021 <\/strong>\u2013 The rotating presidency of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/digital\/news\/eu-council-presidency-pitches-significant-changes-to-ai-act-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU Council shared a first compromise text on the AI Act draft<\/a> with <span>major changes in the areas of social scoring, biometric recognition systems, and high-risk applications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-doc-id=\"1907049000000218001\" data-doc-type=\"writer\"><strong>6 August 2021 <\/strong>\u2013 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/STUD\/2021\/696968\/IPOL_STU(2021)696968_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> analysing the use of biometric techniques from an ethical and legal perspective commissioned by the European Parliament\u2019s Policy Department for Citizens\u2019 Rights and Constitutional Affairs was published.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span data-doc-id=\"1907049000000218001\" data-doc-type=\"writer\"><strong>6 August 2021<\/strong> \u2013 The public consultation period on the AI Act<\/span><span> by the European Commission ended.
